DIY Mason Jar Straw Cup Tutorial

Now that the weather is warmer, we're making a lot of smoothies. We only have one kind of sippy cup for Ezra, and it is not the kind with an open straw that is good for drinking thick liquids. After quickly realizing there was no way I was letting him drink from a straw in an open cup, I improvised this. It works great! It's almost completely spill-proof, though I can't guarantee that a mason jar would never shatter if a toddler threw it in a fit of rage.

Step 0. Gather your tools: mason jar with lid, scissors, sharpie, straw, and plastic you are going to recycle* (cardboard would work too - it'd just be single-use) You also need a hole punch. Ours is not pictured - you'll see why.
*I used a green storage lid from IKEA for this tutorial - it is not the easiest to work with because it's pretty stiff plastic, but it contrasts nicely.

Step 1. Trace the mason jar lid onto the plastic.

Step 2. Cut out the circle. Make sure it fits inside the screw cap and you can close the lid tightly.

Step 3 (optional). Most plastic seems to be flexible enough to fit if you just trace the mason jar lid and cut - no trimming required. This particular piece of plastic was pretty stiff, so I had to trim the plastic circle a bit. You can do this by turning the mason jar upside down so the mouth is on the plastic circle and marking the excess, then trimming it.

Step 4. Punch a hole in the lid.
(This is our behemoth hole punch… it didn't fit in the materials picture!)

Step 5. See if your straw fits through the hole. It may not.
If it does fit, skip to step 7.

Step 6. If your straw is too big, cut 4 to 8 small slits around the hole.
This will make the opening big enough for your straw while keeping the seal tight.

Step 7. Insert straw in your new plastic lid.

Step 8. Screw the cap on to make sure everything fits, then fill with something delicious!
