Asher - 1 Month

One month. I couldn't find the monthly stickers.

Weight: 10.0lb (home measurement)

Length: 21" (home measurement)

Clothing Size: 3 months. Outgrew NB by height at 2-3 weeks.
Milestones: Eye contact, maybe a few smiles?

Favorite Things: Nursing and snuggles

Least Favorite Things: The sun, diaper changes, but also having a dirty diaper, eating from bottles

Daily Routine: wake up around 6 (maybe 7 if we're lucky). Nurse, interspersed with some time laying on the floor staring at whatever fascinating thing is within 2 feet of face. Nap from about 10-1. Awake from about 1-3. Short nap from 4-5 or 6 and then wake up and cluster feed until about 9. Wake to nurse twice at night, around 1 and 4 a.m.

Life Update: Asher is a pretty chill little dude. He spends a lot of time sleeping, and when he's awake, he often likes to just hang out on his back or belly on the floor. His fussy time is between 5-9 p.m., when he cluster feeds, but the other 20 hours of the day, he rarely cries. He likes to be held and worn, and we are happy to oblige. I am enjoying using my many carriers with him. Ring slings and my shorter woven wrap (between size 3 and 4) have been my favorites this month. We go for lots of family walks around our neighborhood.

He also loves to nurse! Hence the three pounds and two inches he has gained since birth. I was not ready for him to outgrow newborn clothes so fast and for his sweet little newborn arm wrinkles to be replaced with the beginnings of fat rolls! I think he's going to be a big guy. Right now he kind of looks like an old man because he lost most of what little hair was on top of his head. I hope it grows back soon!

Asher spent two days in the hospital this month with a UTI. One afternoon I noticed he was feverish, floppy, extra sleepy and not eating much, plus he was grimacing and whimpering while sleeping, so we took him in to the nearest urgent care branch of Children's Hospital. Poor Asher had to have a blood draw, urine culture, and lumbar puncture to rule out several types of infection, and the urine culture was positive. So he spent 2 days hospitalized for IV antibiotics and then had 8 more days of abx at home. All the testing was hard on him (and me!) but once he got that first dose of antibiotics, he was back to his normal self.

Ezra has been adjusting to his new role as big brother moderately gracefully. He is sweet to Asher when he pays attention to him, but he mostly just asks for attention from whoever is attending to Asher. Ross and I are not having too much trouble adjusting to being parents of two either. We are both home most of the time since I'm on maternity leave and he's still on his regular schedule of SAHD by day, grad student by night. It is certainly harder to get things done when one of us is solo with the two of them, but we are figuring it out. We are so happy sweet little Asher is part of our family now!
